The illumin (light) S (sound) is a concept that was born out of the mind of Philip Joseph incepted by a series of experiences and dreams in 2001.

With passion, research and development the first working version was built in 2009, a minimal single laser beam that sent a simple MIDI on/off message - similar to a keyboard note press and release.

In 2010 a multi-beam version was developed by using laser animations to multiply a single beam to appear as multiple beams. In this iteration the beams send a chromatic scale of MIDI notes that can be stepped up and down over three musical octaves.

In 2011 the addition of vertical axis articulation was completed. Additionally two custom software developments provided control over vertical zone articulation and note / scale interpolation.
